In the Sustainability Community Breakfast gathering on June 13, 2007 in Vancouver, Canada (organized by the Greater Vancouver Regional District), question was raised about toxic mercury in energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs. The concern was about the cummulation of small amount of toxic mercury from each compact fluorescent light bulb which can add up to a significant amount as Canada ban the use of incandescent light bulbs in future. While Canada's federal goverernment noted the presence of small amount of mercury in compact fluorescent light bulbs in Natural Resources Canada's website, no local program has been established to provide easy and convenient safe disposal of such toxic waste from domestic household. Brock Macdonald, the Executive Director of Recycling Council of BC acknowledged that this issue need to be addressed and reported that the Recycling Council of BC will be working with British Columbia's provincial government to address this issue with the hope to solve this problem in three years' time. |
